The Chris Stapleton Road Show

At The Spirit Store · Georges Quay, Dundalk, Co. Louth, A91 NR79

Robin Martin has spent more than thirty years on Irish stages, and when he turns his hand to Chris Stapleton’s catalogue, the result is something worth making a trip for. The Chris Stapleton Road Show is a full-band tribute that works through the Tennessee singer-songwriter’s body of work - Tennessee Whiskey, Broken Halos, Fire Away, Starting Over and more - delivered with the kind of grit and vocal weight the originals demand. If you have ever heard Stapleton and wondered what that sound feels like in a small, loud room rather than a stadium, this is the answer. A good night for anyone who likes their country music raw and their pints close to hand.

What to expect

Robin Martin fronts the Road Show as Ireland’s tribute to one of modern country’s most distinctive voices. The set pulls from across Stapleton’s career - the bluesy stomp of Tennessee Whiskey, the gospel-edged Broken Halos, the quiet devastation of Starting Over. This is not a karaoke operation; the band plays live and the emphasis is on capturing the soul of the source material rather than just the shapes of the songs. The Spirit Store’s upstairs room is small enough that you can actually see the whites of the performers’ eyes, which suits this kind of music well. Doors are at 7:30pm.

Getting there

Dundalk is straightforward to reach from Dublin or Belfast. The Dublin-Belfast Enterprise train stops at Dundalk Clarke station, roughly 50 minutes from Dublin Connolly - the station is about a 10-minute walk from Georges Quay. By road, the M1 motorway brings you directly into town from both directions; parking is available on and around the quayside, with surface car parks nearby. Georges Quay itself sits on the inner harbour, easy to find once you are in the town centre.

While you’re in Dundalk

Dundalk is the main town in the county and has a decent few options for food and drink before a gig, with the quayside area in particular worth a wander. There is more to see in Dundalk and across Co. Louth.
