Deirdre O'Kane - Work In Progress (Thu)

At The Spirit Store · Georges Quay, Dundalk, Co. Louth, A91 NR79

Catching Deirdre O’Kane at a work-in-progress night is a different proposition to seeing a finished tour show. The material is new, the jokes are being stress-tested in real time, and the comedian is visibly working things out rather than delivering a polished hour. That rawness is the point - and for comedy fans, it is often more entertaining than the finished product. O’Kane is one of Ireland’s sharpest stand-ups, known for her timing and her eye for the comic in everyday life. The first night at the Spirit Store sold out fast enough that a second was added, which says something about how people feel about watching her work a room.

What to expect

The show runs roughly 60 to 90 minutes in an informal, flexible format. O’Kane is testing new material - jokes in their early stages, bits that may shift significantly before they become part of a full tour show. The Spirit Store’s main room holds around 200 people, which keeps the atmosphere close enough that the loose, conversational dynamic a work-in-progress show depends on actually lands. The venue is a multi-award winning live music and comedy space on Georges Quay, one of the most respected small venues in the country. Food is available until 8pm if you want to eat before the show - A91 Street Food has a residency inside - and the bar is open throughout. Doors open at 7:30pm, so arriving a little before that gives you time to settle in.

Getting there

Dundalk sits on the main Dublin - Belfast corridor, about 85km north of Dublin and 115km south of Belfast. By road, the M1 motorway runs directly to the town; take junction 16 for the town centre. Georges Quay is a short walk from the centre, running along the Castletown River. Enterprise Rail on the Dublin Connolly - Belfast Central line stops at Dundalk Clarke station, roughly a 10-minute walk from the Spirit Store. Bus Eireann coaches from Dublin and Belfast stop in Dundalk town centre. Street parking is available around Georges Quay in the evening, and there are public car parks within a few minutes’ walk.

While you’re in Dundalk

If you are making an evening of it, Dundalk town centre has a good range of pubs and restaurants within walking distance of the Spirit Store. The quayside itself has a quiet, local character away from the main retail streets. There is more to see in Dundalk and across Co. Louth.
