At The Spirit Store · Georges Quay, Dundalk, Co. Louth, A91 NR79
The Muddy River Band have built a devoted following across Irish venues by doing one thing exceptionally well: honouring the music of Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Van Morrison with a full-band sound that leaves little room for polish to hide behind. This September they return to the Spirit Store in Dundalk for what is their third appearance at the venue - the previous two sold out. If that tells you anything, it is that tickets are worth getting early.
Six musicians fill the Spirit Store stage, working through the catalogues of three giants of roots, folk and rock. The set draws on Dylan’s storytelling economy, Young’s distorted lyricism and Morrison’s soulful improvisations - material that rewards close listening but also fills a room. The band are based in Kildare and have played theatres and arts centres around the country, including the National Opera House in Wexford and Draiocht in Blanchardstown. Their approach leans into the live, communal feel of these songs rather than faithful reproduction; expect the songs to breathe a little differently than the recordings. Doors at 7:30pm.
Dundalk is on the main Dublin to Belfast rail corridor, with regular Irish Rail services from Connolly or Pearse stations taking roughly an hour. By road it is about 80km north of Dublin on the M1, straightforward and well-signed. The Spirit Store sits on Georges Quay at the southern edge of Dundalk town centre, close to the Inner Relief Road. Street parking is available on the quays and in the town centre, though on a Friday evening it fills quickly - arriving a little before doors open is sensible. Buses from Dublin run on the Bus Eireann route 100X.
Dundalk is a town that repays a proper look: the County Museum, the Cistercian ruins at Knockabbey, and the Cooley Peninsula just to the north are all within easy reach if you make a weekend of it. There is more to see in Dundalk and across Co. Louth.
