At The Spirit Store · Georges Quay, Dundalk, Co. Louth, A91 NR79
The New Indians Showband bring a full-production Irish showband show to the Spirit Store on a Sunday afternoon in July - brass, big-band arrangements, sharp stage attire and all the music that packed dancehalls across Ireland from the 1960s through to the 1980s. It is a proper live act rather than a tribute-covers-band job: Lee Brady, grandson of Noel Brady who fronted the original Indians Showband, steps into the “Big Chief” role to carry that family tradition forward. If you grew up with showband music, or you are curious what the fuss was about, this is a good place to find out.
The set pulls from the Indians Showband’s own catalogue - songs like The Hucklebuck and The Twist that were made for dancing - and widens out to include favourites associated with Dickie Rock, Red Hurley and Joe Dolan. The band is tight and full-sounding, with the brass section and showband attire that are central to the whole experience. The Spirit Store is a compact bar and live-music venue on Georges Quay in Dundalk, which means you are close to the stage and it tends to feel like an occasion rather than a concert hall. Doors open at 5pm, so it runs on Sunday-afternoon timing - early enough that you can make a proper evening of it in town afterwards. Waltzes, foxtrots and the kind of floor-filling numbers that made Irish ballrooms famous are what this show is built around.
Dundalk sits on the main Dublin to Belfast rail corridor, so it is well served by Irish Rail from both directions. The station is roughly a ten-minute walk from Georges Quay. By road, the town is on the M1 motorway with several junctions leading into the town centre. Georges Quay is on the quayside side of Dundalk, and street parking is available along the quays and in nearby town-centre car parks, though it is worth arriving a little early on a Sunday to pick your spot.
Dundalk is a working town with a strong live-music tradition, good food options around the town centre and the Cooley Peninsula close by for anyone who wants to add a coastal drive or walk to the day. There is more to see in Dundalk and across Co. Louth.
