At The Spirit Store · Georges Quay, Dundalk, Co. Louth, A91 NR79
Wallis Bird is one of those performers who makes a small room feel like an occasion. The Wexford-born, Berlin-based singer-songwriter has been building a devoted following across Europe for two decades, and her live shows are the reason. This September she brings her “I Can See Your Tour From Here” Irish tour to Dundalk, playing the Spirit Store on Georges Quay - one of the finest intimate venues in the country. If you have not seen her live before, this is the kind of show people still talk about months later.
Wallis Bird plays guitar in a style all her own - percussive, physical, and at times almost orchestral for a solo performer. Her voice moves from a whisper to a full-throated roar within a single song, and the emotion is never manufactured. She has seven studio albums behind her, from the raw folk energy of Spoons (2007) through to Hands (2022), and she draws freely across that catalogue in concert. The Dundalk date sits in the middle of a nine-date September Irish run, so she will be fully in her stride by the time she arrives. The Spirit Store holds around 200 people in the main room, which means no bad seats and no screens between you and the stage - just the music, as close as you like.
Dundalk is on the main Dublin to Belfast corridor. By road, it is around an hour north of Dublin on the M1, and the N1/A1 continues north into Northern Ireland. By rail, Irish Rail runs frequent services from Dublin Connolly and Drogheda; Dundalk Clarke station is roughly a 15-minute walk from Georges Quay, or a short taxi. Bus Eireann intercity coaches also serve the town from Dublin. The Spirit Store sits right on the quayside - if you are driving, there is street parking along the quay and in the town centre nearby, though arriving early on a Thursday evening is always the safer bet.
Dundalk is a genuine town with a good pub and food scene, and Georges Quay itself has changed considerably in recent years - worth a stroll before the doors open. There is more to see in Dundalk and across Co. Louth.
