Icons of the 70s Show

At The Burnavon · Cookstown, Co. Tyrone

Icons of the 70s Show

If you grew up with the sounds of the seventies - or just wish you had - this is a night worth clearing the diary for. JMG Music Group’s Icons of the 70s Show is a full-scale theatre production touring arts centres across Ireland and Britain, and it lands at Cookstown’s Burnavon on the August bank holiday Saturday. The show pulls together eleven of the decade’s biggest names under one roof, delivered by a multi-talented live cast and a band that knows how to fill a room. It suits anyone who loves the era: fans who danced to this music first time around, and younger audiences discovering just how good those records were.

What to expect

The production runs for around 140 minutes including one interval, so it is a proper evening out rather than a quick set. The cast works through tributes to The Jackson 5, ABBA, Queen, Earth Wind and Fire, Blondie, Gloria Gaynor, Diana Ross, The Bee Gees, Donna Summer, Tina Turner, and more. The backing band is the Mindbenders - an experienced touring outfit whose job is to make the sound feel as close to the original recordings as a live show can get. The costumes match the ambition: expect the sequins, the flares, and the silhouettes that made the decade look the way it did. This is not a pub tribute act; it is a staged concert production with choreography, wardrobe, and a setlist that moves between pop, soul, disco, and funk.

The Burnavon has a Gallery Bar open for pre-show and interval drinks. Several restaurants in Cookstown town centre are within easy walking distance if you want to eat before the show.

Getting there

Cookstown sits roughly in the middle of Northern Ireland, about 45 minutes south-west of Belfast and 30 minutes from Omagh. By road, the A29 runs directly into the town centre from the north and south, and the venue is on Burn Road, close to the main shopping area. The M1 and M2 motorways are both within a short drive for anyone coming from Belfast or further afield. There is a free public car park directly adjacent to the Burnavon, so driving is the most straightforward option. Bus Eireann and Translink Ulsterbus routes serve Cookstown from surrounding towns; check Translink.co.uk for current timetables.

While you’re in Cookstown

Cookstown’s long, wide main street is one of the most distinctive in Ulster, and the town is a useful base for exploring the hills and loughshores of Mid Ulster. There is more to see in Cookstown and across Co. Tyrone.
