The Virginia Show is Cavan’s long-running agricultural show, held each August at the Virginia Show Centre. Now in its eighth decade, it brings livestock classes, produce competitions and trade and craft stalls to the town for a single, packed show day. Created in Cavan, the county’s food and drink producer network, has a stand at the show every year, putting local growers and makers alongside the cattle and horse classes that have always been the backbone of the event.
Virginia Show has been running for more than 70 years and keeps the format of a traditional country show, with livestock and horse classes judged through the day alongside produce, craft and children’s competitions that give local families a reason to enter as well as attend. Trade stands line the showgrounds selling everything from farm machinery to home goods, and demonstrations run throughout the day. Food is a growing part of the show, with Created in Cavan bringing together several of the county’s food and drink producers to sell and sample their produce alongside the show’s own catering. It draws entries and visitors from across east Cavan and into neighbouring Meath and Westmeath, and it remains one of the few agricultural shows still on the calendar in this part of the county.
The Virginia Show Centre is on the edge of Virginia town, a short walk from Main Street. Virginia sits on the N3 Dublin to Cavan road, and Bus Éireann services on that route stop in the town. Showground parking is available on site on the day, though it fills quickly given the volume of visitors and exhibitors.
Virginia sits on the shore of Lough Ramor and is worth building a day around beyond the show itself, with the lake, parkland and cafes on the doorstep of the showgrounds. There is more to see in Virginia and across Co. Cavan.
