At Lough Ramor · Lough Ramor, Virginia, Co. Cavan
Each August, around 150 athletes line up at the shore of Lough Ramor for one of the more scenic multi-sport events on the Irish calendar. Organised by Virginia Triathlon and Cycling Club, a club active since 2011, the VTCC Lough Ramor Triathlon draws competitors from all over the country to tackle a sprint course on a quiet Co. Cavan lake. It suits experienced triathletes looking for a well-run event in a beautiful setting, but the club is equally welcoming to first-timers - a duathlon option and a shorter 400-metre swim alternative mean you can take part at whatever level suits.
The sprint triathlon course runs 750 metres, 20 kilometres, and five kilometres - swim, bike, run. The swim follows a triangular course off the Lough Ramor shoreline. Cyclists then head out on a 20km loop along the Munterconnaught Road around the lake, a route that mixes quiet country lanes with stretches of open road. The run is a 5km trail through forest, finishing back at the lakeside - which means even the finish line has a decent view.
Safety is well-managed. Local scouts patrol on kayaks, Ramor Watersports Club provides boat cover, and civil defence volunteers are on hand throughout the swim. Registration is handled through Triathlon Ireland, and the club keeps the event friendly rather than purely competitive. With a 9:15am start on a Sunday morning, most people are done and dry well before lunchtime.
Virginia is on the N3 Dublin to Cavan road, about 90 minutes from the M50. From Dublin, take the N3 north through Navan and Kells; Virginia is signposted off the main road. Parking is available near the lake. There is no practical public transport option for an early morning start, so most athletes travel by car - many from Dublin and other Leinster counties.
Virginia is a pleasant market town with good food options and the lake itself is worth a walk after the race, when the course is no longer coned off and the shoreline is peaceful. There is more to see in Virginia and across Co. Cavan.
