At Various venues, Cavan Town and county · Various, Co. Cavan
One Friday evening in September, galleries open their doors, studio artists invite strangers in off the street, and the centre of Cavan Town briefly becomes an outdoor cultural carnival - all free of charge. Culture Night is a national event, but Cavan’s edition has quietly earned a reputation for reaching well beyond the county town. Recent programmes have stretched from Blacklion in the north-west to Ballyjamesduff in the south, giving the whole county a stake in the night. It suits families, curious adults and anyone who has never set foot in an arts centre but might, just once, give it a go.
The 2026 programme is coordinated by Cavan Arts Office and typically runs to 40-plus events across the county. Based on previous years, the Townhall Street area in Cavan Town becomes the focal point from late afternoon, with street performers, live music and interactive installations spilling out into Market Square. Townhall Arts Centre itself has hosted visual arts shows, open studio sessions and live performances. Out around the county you can expect heritage centre talks, traditional music sessions in unexpected settings, community craft workshops and choral performances in local churches. The 2025 edition featured a 300-year-old thatched cottage in Drumanny hosting traditional music and storytelling alongside what was billed as Ireland’s largest handcrafted drum. That gives a fair sense of how Cavan does things - ambitious in scale, local in spirit. The full 2026 programme is published in late August at culturenight.ie.
Cavan Town sits roughly 110km north-west of Dublin via the N3, a journey of about 90 minutes. Bus Éireann runs regular services from Dublin Busáras (route 30) directly to Cavan Town, with the journey taking around two hours. From the north, Cavan is accessible via the A3/N3 from Enniskillen or the N54 from Monaghan. Parking in Cavan Town is generally available on-street and in the Farnham Street area in the evening; Culture Night itself sees a lot of foot traffic, so arriving slightly early is sensible if you are driving.
Cavan Town is a decent-sized market town with a good few pubs and restaurants for before or after the evening. The wider county is lough country - over 360 lakes - and the Cavan Burren in the north-west is one of the more underrated landscapes in Ulster. There is more to see in Cavan and across Co. Cavan.
