Windows of Imperfection: An Exhibition by Aoife O'Brien

At Nenagh Arts Centre · Banba Square, Nenagh North, Nenagh, Co. Tipperary

Windows of Imperfection exhibition by Aoife O'Brien

A solo exhibition at Nenagh Arts Centre, Windows of Imperfection brings together drawings, paintings and collages by artist Aoife O’Brien across the full month of August. The work centres on the relationship between material, time and attention - what happens to things when they are looked at closely, worked with slowly, and allowed to show their grain. If you are interested in thoughtful, process-driven visual art that rewards a quiet look, this is well worth the short detour into Nenagh town centre. Admission is free throughout the run.

What to expect

The exhibition is hung in the corridor space at Nenagh Arts Centre, an intimate setting that suits work of this kind. O’Brien’s pieces explore themes of value, transformation and perception, using both traditional and contemporary techniques. The corridor format means you move through the work at your own pace, with each piece asking you to slow down rather than scan. A formal launch evening takes place on Friday 7 August at 6:30pm - a good opportunity to hear the artist speak about the work and meet others interested in the Tipperary arts scene. The exhibition then runs daily through to 31 August, so there is no pressure to catch a single date.

Getting there

Nenagh is the county town of North Tipperary and sits at the junction of the M7 Dublin - Limerick motorway and the N52. From Dublin, take the M7 and exit at junction 26 for Nenagh - roughly 130km, under 90 minutes. From Limerick, it is around 40km north on the M7 and N7. Bus Eireann serves Nenagh on several routes including the Dublin - Limerick express corridor, with the bus stop a short walk from Banba Square. The town also has a rail station on the Ballybrophy - Limerick line, though services are infrequent; check Irish Rail timetables before travelling by train. Parking is available in the town centre car parks within a few minutes’ walk of the arts centre.

While you’re in Nenagh

Nenagh Arts Centre itself is worth a look beyond the galleries - it occupies a fine Victorian Italianate building that started life as the town hall in 1889, built in rubble masonry on the east side of Banba Square facing the courthouse. The town has a well-preserved Norman castle and a decent selection of cafes and independent shops along Banba Square and Pearse Street. There is more to see in Nenagh and across Co. Tipperary.
